Brazilian Butt Lift

Dr. Ouakil, an aesthetic surgeon trained in Paris and Brazil under the guidance of Prof. Ivo Pitanguy, offers all techniques for buttock enhancement and augmentation. He has also been trained by Dr. Raul Gonzales, a pioneer of the BBL.

Learn about the BBL technique to best prepare for your consultation. The BBL techniques combine fat grafting to the buttocks and buttock implants.

Fat grafting uses your own fat, a natural method for buttock enhancement (either alone or in conjunction with an implant).

The aesthetic demand for buttocks has significantly increased in recent years, driven by social media (e.g., Kim Kardashian). The techniques for fat reinjection have greatly improved.

The combination of buttock implants and fat grafting yields the best results: muscular enhancement from the implant and shaping of hollows/curves from the fat.

Who are the candidates for Brazilian Butt Lift?

This technique is suitable for women and men who have:

  • Buttocks considered too flat
  • Loose buttocks
  • Asymmetry of the buttocks
  • Buttocks considered too small
  • Significant weight loss altering the shape

How is buttock augmentation performed using the Brazilian method?

The BBL is performed with injections of your own fat (liposuction + preparation + reinjection).

  • Extraction through tumescent liposuction, gentle and selective (fine multi-hole cannulas).
  • Preparation of the fat: rinsing, filtration, decantation, centrifugation.
  • Reinjection in micro-deposits (fan-shaped, layered) into subcutaneous and muscular tissues.

Approximately 1/3 of the harvested fat is reinjected, up to 400–500 cc per side. The procedure also reshapes the waist and lower back → complete sculpting of the posterior contour.

What type of anesthesia is used?

Most often: general anesthesia. Rarely: intravenous sedation + local anesthesia (more commonly practiced in the USA).

What other techniques are available?

The buttocks can also be augmented with silicone implants placed in the gluteus maximus muscle. The combination of implants + fat yields the most beautiful results.

Preoperative preparation

  • Stop smoking 4 weeks prior
  • No anti-inflammatories 8 days prior (aspirin, ibuprofen, etc.)
  • Fasting after midnight the night before the operation

Postoperative recovery time

Strictly follow postoperative instructions for the survival of fat cells.

  • Bed rest + hydration during the first week
  • No sitting or driving for 3 weeks
  • Sleep on your stomach
  • Minimum of 2 weeks off work
  • Lipo-panty (compression) 24/7 for 2 weeks

Resumption of normal activities at 4 weeks.

Possible risks and complications

Common aftereffects:

  • Swelling, bruising
  • Numbness, pain

Possible complications:

  • Hematoma
  • Fat embolism
  • Stretch marks
  • Partial resorption of fat cells

Fat (lipofilling) is safer than implants alone, but the volume obtained remains limited. The best result: combination of implants (large central core) + lipofilling (overall shaping).

The two procedures can be separated (lipofilling first, implant later).

Common questions

How long do fat injections last?

If the fat is well harvested, prepared, and injected, the result is durable (stabilized at 6 months). On average: 30% resorption. No touch-up needed if the surgeon is experienced.

  • Gentle harvesting at low pressure
  • Preparation through rinsing/decantation cycles
  • Multi-layer micro-deposit injection

What happens in case of weight variation?

The transferred fat behaves like normal fat: → if you gain weight, the buttocks gain size; if you lose weight, they decrease. After 6–8 months, the stabilized fat (≈50%) does not spontaneously disappear.
